The next time you plan to take a few days off from work, why not do something different and go on a trekking holiday instead? Markha Valley Trek, Ladakh

The Markha Valley located in between Zanskar and Ladakh gives trekkers a wonderful introduction to Buddhist influence here. On trekking tours, one gets to see ancient monasteries, remote villages, high altitude passes, peaks like Kangyatse, Nun – Kun and pastures like Nimaling. The routes give trekkers a good view of the Himalayas and trekkers need to cross high altitude passes in the Central Ladakh Valley namely Stok La, Kongmaru La and Gandla. Zanskar Valley Trek, Ladakh

The Zanskar Valley which lies between the Greater Himalayas and the Zanskar mountains lets trekkers get a close-up of the wonderful landscape featuring mountains of various shapes, glaciers, clear streams and lush green meadows in the summer. The valley is also famous for the ‘Chadar Trek’ which involves trekking across a frozen Zanskar river in winter. The challenge lies in navigating the thin ice and dealing with extremely cold nights and sunny days. The best time to undertake this trek is between December end to mid- February.

Kuari Pass Trek, Garhwal

Lord Curzon first reached the Kuari Pass on a trekking expedition in 1905 and after that path is called the Curzon Trail. Trekkers get a close view of the eastern peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas, the Gohna Tal Lake and the twin peaks of Nanda Devi. Animals such as the snow leopard, the musk deer and birds are some of the other attractions on this trek. On your trekking holiday, don’t forget to make a trip to Auli which is famed for its skiing slopes. One of the best ways to end this trek is with a rejuvenating bath in the Tapovan hot springs. Go for your trekking tour in May, June or September, October.

Sikkim Kanchenjunga Trek, Sikkim

Sikkim is situated in the Eastern Himalayas and is home to the 3rd highest summit in the world – Mount Kanchenjunga. The most popular route is from Yuksom to the Goecha la Pass which is at the foot of the mountain. On the trek one walks through large forests of rhododendron, orchids and pine besides higher valleys and green meadows where yaks graze. Physically, this trek puts one to the test because the paths include plenty of uphill and downhill walking and is recommended for veterans with prior trekking experience. April – June and September November is the best time for going on this trek.
